JOB DESCRIPTION
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to three (3) field technicians to assist with fish and mussel field sampling for the summer and early fall of 2022. Duties include collecting mussels by hand sampling, snorkeling, and quantitative sampling along transect lines; setting and maintaining water quality collection devices; collecting eDNA samples; collecting fish by dip-netting, seining, and trawling, as well as back-pack, barge, and boat electrofishing; lab and museum work, including data entry, processing specimens for curation, museum maintenance; equipment cleaning and maintenance; and other duties as needed. Travel and long hours in the field should be expected. This position will be based out of Champaign, Illinois. Housing not provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
Course work in biology, environmental science, or related field is recommended. The candidate must be able to hike to remote sites, travel overnight (all travel is reimbursed), work outside under adverse field conditions (biting insects, leeches, mud, extreme heat or cold), lift 40 pounds, and be comfortable in water, on boats and personal watercraft. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to candidates with a desire to learn about freshwater systems.
Salary: $14 - $15 per hour, depending on experience
Available: June 13, 2022 – September 9, 2022 (start and end dates are flexible)
