Position Summary:
Seeking 1 high-energy, motivated individual who is passionate about animals and education for our Naturalist Leadership and Animal Programs Internship. In the mornings you will care for our captive animals in the Natural Science Museum, lead presentations for campers aged 5-12 years, and public animal feeding programs. In the afternoon you will lead science and adventure-based classes around Nantucket that you planned. These classes are designed at improving naturalist and interpretation skills for teens aged 13 – 16 years. You will teach them how to take care of our animals so that they can become volunteers in our facilities or have the skills they need to volunteer at similar places. Major Duties:
- Plan and write weekly lesson plans for the Naturalist Leadership Program with guidance from the Director of Education
- Prepare any needed educational props or materials to go along with your lessons
- Lead teens in nature hikes, wetland studies, survival skill instruction, live animal programs, bird watching, orienteering, community service projects, art projects, insect collecting, kayaking excursions, snorkeling exploration, and much more
- Maintain all educational supplies and equipment by washing and putting away after use
- Feed and water animals, mist tanks, and make sure animals are well taken care of
- Lead public animal feeding and animal spotlight programs
- Attend all required meetings including end of the summer cleaning (last Saturday). To facilitate this we ask interns to keep their weekday schedule open from 8 am-6 pm
- Fill in for camp instructors as needed in the event of an emergency
- Help museum staff as needed
- Teach volunteers and camp staff how to assist in the animal care room
- Additional responsibilities may include helping in the main office, leading public or private programs such as birthday parties or snorkeling excursions, and assisting with other facets of the Association’s day-to-day operations.
