Canada Goose Research Technician – IL

The Department of Zoology and Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory at Southern Illinois University invites applications for field technicians to assist on a project studying winter ecology of urban Canada geese in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan area. These are full time, fixed term, seasonal positions with a starting date of December 01, 2015. The job requires driving university vehicles in an urban environment. Employee must be able to work under supervision, collect data independently, and follow protocol. The employee must work as a team member and be comfortable living in shared quarters.
Job Duties: Conduct daily resight surveys of neck-collared Canada geese. Conduct instantaneous focal behavioral observation of geese. Scout for additional potential goose locations. Assist in baiting and setting of rocket nets, cast nets, and net guns. Band, collar, and collect morphological measurements and DNA samples of captured geese. Maintain accurate field notes, enter data precisely, and maintain equipment.
This is a full time appointment requiring an excess of 40 hours per week. The majority of field work will be conducted from early morning to early afternoon
Qualifications:
- Previous field experience should include capture and banding of waterfowl. • Willingness to work required hours. • Familiarity/experience working with waterfowl (observing, capturing, and banding/marking techniques). • Strong attention to detail. • Ability to conduct work independently or as part of a team as the situation demands. • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions. • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an ecological research team. • Interest in waterfowl or general avian life history, demographics and habitat use. • Preference will be given to applicants with experience rocket netting waterfowl.
