This is a full-time, 12-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Practice position with Oregon Sea Grant (OSG) and Oregon State University Extension Service (OSUES) serving the Oregon Coastal Region with specific emphasis on the North Coast & lower Columbia River. The position will be based in Astoria, Oregon and will report to the OSU Regional Administrator in consultation with the OSG Outreach & Engagement Leader.
OSG is a statewide program housed at OSU and is one of 33 programs in the National Sea Grant College Program network funded by Congress through National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association's National Sea Grant College Program in partnership with OSU.
This position carries the general & specific responsibilities of a faculty member described in the OSU Faculty Handbook. These include development of an Extension education program, service contributions & active professional development.
This position will work with commercial fishing fleets, scientists, local, state & federal agencies, fishing support businesses and the public to develop, execute, coordinate & evaluate educational programs related to commercial fisheries. This individual must have experience working directly with commercial fishermen and the ability to create & maintain relationships. Active & effective communication with staff & key stakeholders, who may be from diverse backgrounds, is critical to the success of this position.
This individual will have an interest in marine science and/or policy but is not primarily a researcher. Knowledge of current fisheries management practices, types of Oregon fisheries & successful methods to engage fishermen in research, policy & education are all essential to this position. Being able to work on a variety of different kinds of fisheries issues is also essential.
Position Duties:
80% - Teaching, Advising, and Other Assignments:
Design, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate community education programs related to commercial fisheries that promote understanding of fisheries and coastal policy, that help commercial fishermen and fishing communities be better integrated into decision making and problem solving, , and that foster sustainability of fishery resources, and the public's understanding of those resources.
Make significant contributions as a "team player" with other community educators and co-learners including diverse clientele and volunteers in multidisciplinary or multi-agency projects across program areas and in different coastal communities.
Develop, integrate, apply, and disseminate existing or new research-based knowledge to affect changes that promote improved management of the fishery resource.
Coordinate delivery of community education programs with appropriate partners and organizations, agencies, and industries.
Work as a team member with Oregon Sea Grant and Extension faculty and with other Extension program areas and state programs, when appropriate, to develop and deliver community education programs.
Work as a team member with the Extension County Leader, other faculty and support staff, and with stakeholders to address organizational issues and opportunities. Organize and maintain program advisory and management committees or networks to identify program needs, make recommendations, assist in program implementation, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Work effectively with colleagues to promote good communications within the office and within the community. Use multiple methods of electronic communication (i.e. web sites, publications, video conferencing and other online methods) to collaborate internally and externally as appropriate.
Maintain professional competency and seek professional experiences to insure accurate and pertinent program offerings, effective teaching and delivery methods, and professional and personal growth.
Seek grant opportunities, write grants and provide leadership as Principal Investigator. Implement fee-based programming and cost-recovery practices, develop partnerships, and solicit external funding to support and enhance educational programs as appropriate.
Utilize technology successfully as a tool to increase the impact of program delivery on constituents including participating with Ask-an-Expert.
Develop an annual plan of work addressing educational needs as well as evaluate the quality and impact of educational programs provided to audiences as appropriate.
Link your program level output with the overall Oregon Sea Grant, OSU Extension and University brand in all opportunities. Provide community and statewide opinion leaders and decision makers the understanding and context on how your program level Extension work relates to overall Extension programming output. Annually provide impact statement reports adhering to Oregon Sea Grant and Extension criteria.
15% - Scholarship and Creative Activities:
Scholarly and creative work is intellectual work whose significance is validated by peers and that is communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on outcomes that recognize activities as a professional practitioner in community settings as defined by the incumbent's position description.
Minimum/Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Marine Resource Management, Fisheries, Natural Resources, Education (with natural resource emphasis) or related field.
At least three years' experience in public education, outreach programs, community development, building public engagement processes, or related areas.
Demonstrated knowledge of commercial fishing and ability to develop and maintain relationships with commercial fishermen.
Evidence of leadership demonstrated by past success in team building, creative problem solving, communication, facilitation skills, and program development and evaluation.
Demonstrated Extension teaching skills and strong written and communication skills, including ability to articulate to stakeholder groups the relative impacts of potential policy or management decisions based on current research.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Demonstrated evidence of good judgement, leadership, and organizational skills and the ability to be objective and work effectively with advisory groups and cooperators, that may be from a diverse background.
Demonstrated ability to successfully write grants and provide leadership as the Principal Investigator.
Demonstrated connections to coastal communities, commercial fishing industry, and other coastal stakeholders.
Ability to use common computer software, web sites, smart phone apps, social media and ability to use technology to stay connected (check email, access calendar, etc.) while working away from the office.
Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
