This position is located at the Grangeville Air Center, Grangeville Idaho. The incubant will serves as an Foreman for a nationally shared resource smokejumper program. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in managing the activities of the Smokejumper Group and to provide the Forest Service’s highest level of technical expertise in the field of smokejumping, loft and loadmaster. The incumbent works directly for the Smoke Jumper Base Manager.
This is a primary/rigorous firefighter position under the provisions of 5 USC 83369(c) CSRS and 8412(d) FERS.
DUTY STATION SPECIFICS: The Grangeville Air Center (GAC) is responsible for interagency wildfire suppression, emergency and disaster coordination to several states and Federal agencies in the Northern Rocky Mountains. The Smokejumper Unit operates out of the Grangeville Air Center, which is located a half mile North of Grangeville at the Idaho County Airport. The Air Center resources include the Forest Aviation Officer, 30 smokejumpers, a Tanker Base Manager with 2 single engine air tankers, a contract Long Ranger helicopter, the Nez Perce/Clearwater Helicopter Manager and a ten-person helitack crew. Government Housing is not available.
THE COMMUNITY: Grangeville is a small community of 3200 residents. It offers 6 churches, 5 motels, 5 banks, one hospital, a nursing home, several doctors and dentists, 2 grocery stores, a public library, public school system, 1 local newspaper, cable television and Internet services, 1 indoor theater and 1 outdoor theater, a post office, local radio station, police and volunteer fire department, and several small businesses.
Grangeville sits at 3300 feet above sea level. Average rainfall is 23 inches and average snowfall is 61 inches. The average January temperature is 20 degrees and the average July temperature is 82 degrees.
Recreational opportunities include a golf course, bowling alley, several city parks, two small ski hills, and numerous trails for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling.
