EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
POSITION: Community Forester
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist Forestry Programs Manager with daily operations at CommuniTree Gardens, a 6-acre community-assisted tree nursery located in Creve Coeur Park (St. Louis County). Duties include:
- Working collaboratively with volunteers to containerize seedlings and grow out trees and shrubs until ready for distribution or
- Assist staff with processing applications for free trees and coordinating pick up from the
- Support Forestry Programs Manager with selection, transplanting, husbandry and harvesting of trees in 7- and 15-gallon growing
- Providing technical assistance and mentoring to individuals and groups, including nursery
- Assist with sale and distribution of selected trees and shrubs; assist staff with marketing efforts for ReLeaf sales.
- Utilize tree canopy and other data to help identify Priority ReLeaf planting Coordinate community volunteers to assist with planting events and ensure ongoing care for newly planted trees.
- Help teach forestry-related classes, including the TreeKeepers Communicate volunteer opportunities with graduates.
- Implement and oversee a data collection protocol to assess health of recently planted
- Represent Forest ReLeaf at community events, including local and state community forestry meetings and
- Oversee implementation of a new statewide initiative to plant 1 million trees by 2020, assisting individuals and organizations with plotting planted trees using the Plant MOre Trees
- Work closely with the Executive Director and other staff, board and volunteers to perform tasks and achieve goals of Forest ReLeaf of
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor of Science in Forestry/Horticulture is required.
Experience: Knowledge of tree identification, planting and care. Previous nursery management experience and familiarity with nursery equipment is helpful, but not necessary. Must have or be able to obtain within one year, International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist Certification.
Other: Strong leadership, communication, and human relations skills – particularly relating to volunteers and clients – are critical for this position. Must have strong computer skills, including the use of Excel and Word. Occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), physical exertion and work in adverse weather conditions may be required.
