Position Summary:
The Corps of Engineers offers student internship positions designed to supplement a student’s academic studies with meaningful work experience in the forest and other natural resource management fields of study. This program is designed to alternate work and school; the normal work season is from mid-May through August. It is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ policy to apply principles of good environmental stewardship to the natural and cultural resources occurring on Corps’ administered and/or managed lands and waters. In the St. Paul District, the Mississippi River Environmental Section Office at La Crescent, MN manages these public resources on approximately 23,000 acres of land within the Upper Mississippi River 9-Foot Navigation Channel Project from Minneapolis, MN to Guttenberg, IA. La Crescent is located approximately 3 miles west of La Crosse, WI. Students assist foresters and natural resource specialists in preparing forest resource inventories, stand prescription development, forest regeneration surveys, timber stand improvement projects, timber cruising, timber sales, and public relations. Work may also include developing and presenting interpretive programs, aquatic plant surveys, prairie restoration, hazard tree analysis, emergency response, water quality monitoring, safety-related programs, minor site maintenance, and basic administrative duties. Field work-sites are primarily accessed via a small workboat. As needed, students may also perform tasks relevant to recreation activities at an assigned park site, including patrol of reservoir areas, conducting individual or group tours of recreation areas, or participating in recreational and water safety programs. Natural resource staff and rangers will mentor students through all aspects of their duties.
