CONSERVATION WORKER III
Conservation Worker III needed for employment with the City of Ann Arbor, MI, Natural Area Preservation (NAP).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with Natural Area Preservation Conservation Crew to:
- Serve as acting crew leader for conservation crew
- Coordinate, prioritize, delegate and track daily progress of field activities of conservation crew
- Meet and communicate with supervisor regularly, keeping them up to date with project progress reports.
- Manually remove invasive plant species from natural areas
- Apply herbicide for the control of invasive plant species
- Assist with controlled ecological burns and serve as line boss on fire line (spring and fall)
- Maintain and construct trails
- Lead volunteer workdays and other environmental stewardship activities
- Collect, process, store and sow seed from native plants
- Keep detailed and accurate records of all work performed
- Assist in implementing stewardship plans and collecting ecological data from natural areas
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Background in natural resource management or equivalent field
- At least 1 year of field work experience with Natural Area Preservation or similar organization
- Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for leading and motivating crew members, volunteers, and public
- Demonstrated experience with identification of native and non-native flora of southeastern Michigan
- Demonstrated experience with invasive species control methods, including controlled fire
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions, lift and carry moderately heavy items, and sit and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to safely work with and maintain chain saws, brush blades, and other power tools
- Experience in decision making and working with minimal field supervision
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including regular evening, weekends, and some holidays
- Valid Driver's License, CPR certification, First Aid certification, and medical card
- MDARD Commercial Pesticide Applicator license (Category 6) required by start of employment
- The City of Ann Arbor is a drug-free workplace. You may be required to submit to a drug screen during the hiring process.
SALARY: $14.18/hour; approximately 40 hours/week; including regular evenings, weekends, and holidays.
DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a seasonal/temporary position not to exceed 10 consecutive months or 1560 hours per calendar year. Successful candidates will be considered for rehire after 2 months break in employment.
