The University of Washington’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) invites applications for a full-time (9-month; 100% FTE) tenure-track Assistant Professor (0116) position to begin Autumn 2016. This position, with a focus on Forest Ecosystem Science and Services, is part of a University of Washington/College of the Environment initiative to strengthen its teaching and research capability in the areas of forest ecosystems, renewable energy, and sustainable technologies.
Ideal candidates will integrate forest ecosystem science with perspectives from one or more other disciplines (e.g., forest management, silviculture, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, economics) and appreciate the intersection of basic and applied sciences that characterizes SEFS. A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in forestry, ecology, forest management, silviculture, ecosystem sciences, or a closely related field is required.

All University of Washington (UW) faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. This position requires developing a strong, externally funded research program. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding potential for high impact research as judged, in part, by their publication record. There will be numerous opportunities for interaction and collaboration within SEFS, in other units of the College of the Environment, across UW, and with land management agencies. In particular, SEFS partners with the US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station in the conduct of ecosystem science research at the Wind River Experimental Forest (WREF; http://www.sefs.washington.edu/centersPrograms/windriver.shtml). Key assets at Wind River include a flux tower, a network of permanent forest plots, and its designation as a core site in the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON; http://www.neoninc.org/). The successful candidate will be expected to organize a portion of their research portfolio around the facilities at WREF, and to strengthen the ties between WREF, UW, and the Forest Service. The successful candidate will contribute to existing and new courses, including field-based instruction, and expand our educational programs. In summary, this person will fill a critical position in our faculty, provide scientific leadership at the WREF, and strengthen our research and teaching capabilities in forest ecosystems and ecosystem services.
