Position Summary (Basic Job Function)
This a temporary or on-call position. Provides clerical support. Responsibilities may include secretarial, receptionist, bookkeeping, information processing or related clerical tasks. Temps On-Campus: includes College of Human Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Detroit Medical Center, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Macomb University Center Term. On campus temps can work six (6) months then terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on call. Off campus temps can continuously work nine(9) month appointment with a one (1) week break in between. On-Call allowed to work up to 40 hours/week for three (3) months then must be moved down to 19 hours/week and cannot work more than 520 hours in any six (6) month period.
Unit Position Summary
Environmental Instructor. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, Hickory Corners, MI.
The MSU’s Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Augusta, MI seeks passionate and energetic environmental educators to engage students in hands-on, place-based learning experiences at MSU’s Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Instructors are assigned to lead field trips and outreach programming, These positions report to KBS’s Outreach Coordinator.
The Kellogg Biological Station is a multidisciplinary research organization within Michigan State University. The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary serves as the public outreach venue of KBS, with a mission to help people gain environmental awareness about our past, present and future through research, education, and outreach programming and events. The KBS Outreach Program delivers hands-on, investigative education about the natural sciences, with special emphasis on youth. The ideal candidate must be comfortable leading groups of people and being outdoors, as most education programs take place outside.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a field related to the natural sciences (such as environmental studies, biology, natural resources, etc.) or education (such as science education, or teaching certificate).
- Encouraged to complete CPR and First Aid certification (employer-provided).
- Passion for environmental education, experiential learning, and connecting people with the natural world.
- Broad knowledge of current environmental issues, the natural world, and human impacts to ecosystems.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students in a group setting and adapt curricula to a variety of age levels, learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Teaching experience in formal or informal contexts (e.g. environmental education, outdoor recreation, interpretation, classroom teaching, or related field).
- Commitment to the mission of KBS.

Summary of Physical Demands
- Spend multiple hours outdoors in all types of weather (including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind).
- Stand and walk for the duration of a typical 2.5 hour program and pre/post program prep.
- Stand and walk on occasionally uneven ground, primarily asphalt and grass.
- Lift up to 25 pounds and assist in emergency procedures.
