Job Description: Natural Areas Steward:Plan, schedule, and work independently on all aspects of on-going field projects related to property management and stewardship of state managed lands. These projects include, but are not limited to vegetation surveys, natural community restoration, habitat assessments and inventories for rare and listed flora and fauna, trails and infrastructure inventories, fencing, and boundary marking. This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, evenings, and occasional week-ends. A willingness to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions is required.
(25%) Inventory and restore natural communities on State Natural Areas, restoration activities include the use of prescribed fire
(25%) Plan, schedule, and complete evaluations of current property management techniques, develop grant applications and write reports
20% Post property boundaries, conduct site inspections, install and maintain signage and other property infrastructure
10% complete habitat assessment for rare and listed species found on State Natural Areas and submit reports to the Natural Heritage Inventory
10% Lead field trips and provide presentations to groups or the general public
10% Complete other Natural Heritage Conservation program duties as assigned
Knowledge Required: Applicants should have an understanding of the principles of restoration ecology & management techniques, including college level training. Applicants must meet and maintain physical fitness standards required by the Department for employees involved in prescribed fire. This includes passing the Work Capacity Test at the MODERATE (Field Test) level, which involves completing a 2-mile walk while carrying a 25lb weighted vest in under 30 minutes. Employment is contingent upon passage of this physical fitness requirement annually.
A well-qualified applicant will have a bachelor's degree in botany, wildlife ecology, biology, or related natural resources field. Expertise in Wisconsin's remnant plant communities, rare and listed plants and animals is desired. Experience with MS office and GIS, as well as, excellent written communication skills are needed. Ability to communicate effectively with project supervisors, co-workers, contractors, internal and external partners, and the public is desired.

Job Description: Habitat Management Technician: Plan, design, coordinate, and perform a broad range of habitat management activities including, but not limited to, forest management and conversion, prescribed burning, invasive plants and brush control, and heavy equipment operation. This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, evenings, and occasional week-ends. A willingness to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, performing physically demanding work, day after day.
(60%) plan, schedule, and coordinate habitat management and invasive species control activities on state-managed lands
A1: plan, schedule and carryout herbicide application to control undesirable plant species
A2: plan, schedule, and coordinate the use of various equipment (chainsaws, brush cutters, farm tractors, and other heavy equipment) to complete habitat improvement projects
A3: plan, schedule, and complete habitat management activities
20% Design prescribed burn plans, coordinate and participate in implementation of burn plans
10% Plan and schedule various non-game wildlife surveys within working area
10% Assist on other Natural Heritage Conservation field projects as assigned
