About this Position
The soil scientist provides basic input to interdisciplinary reports, best management practices for the soil resource, and planning efforts. The position requires skills for gathering, analyzing, and interpreting Soil Survey and Ecological Site Inventory data, including a good understanding of plant soil relationships. This position requires the ability to provide recommendations for protecting the soil resource and input into decisions for managing BLM lands across the district.
Daily activities include participating on interdisciplinary teams for projects related to grazing, forestry, recreation, fuels treatments, habitat restoration, and more; field data collection of soils information and correlation work related to three initial soil surveys; serving as lead for the Ecological Site Inventory effort on the district; and monitoring impacts of projects on the soil resource.

Office and Community Information
Prineville BLM is the largest District in Oregon with 1.65 million acres across 13 counties. The district is in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains and has a mild, relatively dry climate. High temperatures can exceed 100 degrees in the summer, while sub-zero temps are common in the winter.
Prineville, pop. 10,000, is located near the geographic center of the state, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Residents are close to hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing and many other outdoor activities.
