BOTANIST/RANGE RESOURCE TECHNICIAN: A Temporary, Full-time Position. Pay: $15.50/hour. Dates: May 23 - Aug 31 2016.
Location: Salmon Valley Stewardship, Salmon, Idaho.
Qualifications: Salmon Valley Stewardship, founded in 2004, works to promote a sustainable economy and healthy environment in the Salmon Valley Region of Central Idaho. SVS has a cooperative agreement with the Salmon-Challis National Forest Service to collect upland and riparian vegetation data to inform the management of livestock grazing allotments within the SCNF. SVS crews work with public land management agencies, ranchers, and wildlife management agencies to collect vegetation and ground cover data. This data provides an idea of present rangeland condition, future rangeland health trends, and is used in the analysis of grazing permit renewals. Experience/Education in systematic botany or related plant identification courses. • Knowledge of vegetation of the sagebrush steppe ecosystem and riparian vegetation in Central Idaho preferred. • Ability to use a dichotomous key to determine or confirm plant genus and species where possible. • Previous experience with Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM) Protocol preferred but not required. • Possess skills suitable for working and camping in remote and rugged outdoor environments with variable weather, sometimes alone. • A safe driving record and a high comfort level with operating a 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rough roads. • A high level of physical fitness (ability to hike up to 5 miles with a light pack). • The ability to use a hand-held GPS device. • Self-motivation and initiative. • Organization and efficiency. • Willingness to work flexible hours to accommodate field days when necessary. • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
Duties: The Botanist/Resource Technician’s duties at Salmon Valley Stewardship will primarily focus on plant identification and the collection of vegetation data in the Lemhi and Lost River Valleys, located in a remote and botanically rich region in Idaho. The majority of the Botanist’s time will be spent in the field collecting vegetation data with other members of the SVS range crew. The remaining portion of the Botanist’s time will be spent in the office entering data, identifying plants, or helping with other SVS natural resource program activities. Primary Responsibilities: • Assist range crew in the collection of upland and riparian data in the Lemhi and Lost River Valley as Lead Botanist.• Identify flora from upland and riparian settings to the best ability possible. • Attend Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM) training in May or June. • Enter, edit, and quality control check collected data, primarily on rainy-office days. • Assist the range program manager in other range programs, such as sage-grouse habitat monitoring as needed. Work Expectations: Full time seasonal position, 40 hours on average but will depend on climatic conditions and readiness of monitoring. Due to travel and consideration for time efficiencies, some weeks will exceed 8 hour days. Should these priority workloads be accomplished other tasks will be assigned on a weekly basis. Some field work may require camping.
