One-Year Temporary Appointment
The Beautiful Stanislaus National Forest is looking for two highly skilled individuals to join our team in the capacity of GS-462-05 and GS-462-07 Forestry technicians ( these are One year Temporary appointments). The duty locations are at Mi-Wok Ranger District in Mi-Wuk Village, CA and at Groveland Ranger District, in Groveland, CA. These positions are primarily associated with the recovery and reforestation efforts following the Rim Fire that occurred in 2013.

Position Functions and Details include the following: Forestry Technician GS-462-05
Inspects silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contract. Explains steps necessary for compliance to contractor and reports violations to COR. May act as COR on various silvicultural contracts. Examines sapling and larger stands to collect and record data on stocking, density, condition, insects, disease, site index, and ground vegetation. Makes recommendations for areas requiring remedial action. Examines plantations to assess numbers of tree seedlings present, condition, and growth and survival rates, and evidence of animal, insect or disease damage. Selects prospective parent seed trees using established procedures to determine which trees have superior growth characteristics. Determines the relative abundance and species of seed cones by observing the developing cone and pollen buds. As assigned, performs resource work in other functional areas, including fire suppression as qualified.
Position Functions and Details include the following: Forestry Technician GS-462-07
Develops the schedule and work plans for monitoring and inspecting timber stand improvement and reforestation activities. Performs reforestation and stocking surveys in accordance with established procedures to determine planting needs, need for site preparation, plantation conditions, and seedling survival. Performs surveys to determine degree and kind of animal and insect damage existing in assigned area. Performs timber stand improvement surveys to determine stand conditions and the need for TSI treatments, such as precommercial thinning, mistletoe treatment, pruning, and fertilization. Traverses project areas, determines acreage, and drafts maps of those areas.
Collects technical data needed to prescribe stand treatment, to include measurements such as radial growth, basal area, site index, stand density, stand condition, etc. Based on field analysis, assists in preparation of the technical specifications for TSI, tree planting, brush release, or animal damage control contracts.
Serves as COR or inspector on specific contracts as assigned and/or supervises force account projects. Ensures all provisions are enforced and proper measures are taken to protect or enhance values in accordance with contract objectives. Prepares and submits related inspection reports, checks for compliance on needed corrective actions, and recommends final acceptance of the contract upon completion. Assists in preparation of recurring reports associated with the unit TSI and reforestation program.

About the Mi-Wok Ranger District
The Mi-Wok District Office is located in Mi-Wuk Village, California, 15 miles east of Sonora, and 65 miles east of Modesto, CA. The cities of Merced, Stockton, Sacramento and San Francisco are located from 2 to 2.5 hours away. Sonora is a full service community and is the county seat for Tuolumne County http://www.tuolumnecounty.ca.gov/.
The district has a complex array of habitats, providing abundant water, wildlife, forests, forest products, grazing, and recreation. Dry summer weather provide for favorable working and recreational conditions. Fire has traditionally influenced forest conditions, and the control of wildfire and use of prescribed fire is prominent in our annual activity. Management of this National Forest is exciting. Management of valuable timber, wildlife habitat, plants, invasive species, minerals, special uses, roads and infrastructure, recreation, and fire keep this District and Forest in a purposeful state of activity.
About the Groveland Ranger District:
The Groveland Ranger District office is located on Highway 120 eight miles east of the town of Groveland and fifteen miles west of the Big Oak Flat entrance to Yosemite National Park. With 206,688 acres comprising the Groveland Ranger District, recreational activities include camping, fishing, hunting, backpacking, hiking, OHV riding, boating, and whitewater rafting on the exciting Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION:
The historic gold rush town of Groveland is small and friendly, yet it is complete with a grocery store, pharmacy, library/museum, medical clinic, youth center and a variety of restaurants, hotels and shops. You will find churches of many denominations and a variety of service groups. Groveland’s Tenaya Elementary School covers grades K-8 and Tioga High School is grades 9-12. The Groveland’s Yosemite Chamber of Commerce website is a great resource for local information and community events.
ABOUT THE FOREST:
The Beautiful Stanislaus National Forest totals approximately 1,090,000 acres within its boundaries. The Forest is bordered on the south by the Merced River and the Sierra National Forest. The Mokelumne River and the Eldorado National Forest comprise the northern border. Yosemite National Park and the Toiyabe National Forest make up the eastern boundaries.
The Forest Supervisor’s Office is located in Sonora, California. The Forest’s Ranger Districts, Mi-Wok, Calaveras, Summit and Groveland, are within 50 minutes of the Supervisor’s Office.
All of the Emigrant Wilderness is contained within the Stanislaus National Forest as are portions of the Carson-Iceberg and Mokelumne Wilderness Areas. The pristine and dramatic scenery offers a backdrop for outstanding hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding experiences. The Forest is home to a multitude of lakes and reservoirs, as well as 811 miles of rivers and streams and 18 fish species. The Tuolumne and the Stanislaus Rivers are popular destinations, as are Pinecrest and Cherry Lakes. Winter recreational opportunities are numerous and the area abounds with local history from the Gold Rush Era.

About the Area
MiWok Ranger District Office is located about 20 minutes east of Sonora on major Highway 108. Groveland Office is about 50 miles from Sonora on highway 120. The greater Sonora area contains a full compliment of goods and services (Box stores, Arts, Restaurants, Grocery outlets, a health food store, wine vineyard’s, music venues etc.), one hospital, a junior college, an airport, public transportation, county fairgrounds, theaters, a cinema, three golf courses and much more. Local community
There are two public high schools serving this area, one in Sonora and one in Tuolumne. Bus service is provided for all the schools as well as some private schools in the area.

Nearby Yosemite National Park provides year-round recreation and inspiration for both locals and international travelers. Summer time is tourist season.
STANISLAUS SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE (Sonora, CA)
The Forest Supervisor’s Office is located in Sonora, California about 45 miles east of Modesto. The towns and cities of Merced, Stockton, Sacramento and San Francisco are located approximately 1 to 2 hours away. Sonora is a town reminiscent of the gold rush era. Considered a “Gateway to Yosemite National Park”, Sonora is a full service community with one hospital, several school districts and Columbia Community College nearby (http://www.sonoraca.com/home.htm). The area encompassing Sonora and outlying areas contains a population of approximately 50,000 people. Sonora is the county seat for Tuolumne County http://www.tuolumnecounty.ca.gov/.
The Stanislaus National Forest is located adjacent to and north of Yosemite National Park on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Elevations range from 1,500 feet to over 11,000 feet elevation at the mountain crest.
Recreational opportunities on the forest and in the general area are outstanding. Dodge Ridge, Bear Valley and Badger Pass ski areas offer a variety of winter activities. Kayaking, river rafting, fishing, swimming, hiking and camping are very popular.
Weather is mild in the lower elevations with occasional winter snow. Summer temperatures are often over 100 degrees during the day; however, higher elevations with cooler temperatures are easily accessed.
