Production Forestry Technology Manager
The Production Forestry Technology Manager at Weyerhaeuser will be responsible for developing and implementing new technology, as well as, supporting existing technology for growing pine and hardwood plantations. You will utilize your teamwork, collaboration and consultative skills to lead a team of research foresters overseeing study installation, maintenance and measurement, data handling and analysis, developing operational recommendations and providing technical support to operational foresters. You will be challenged to use your professional experience to collaborate with university research cooperatives and company scientists to develop innovative solutions. You will have the opportunity to work in a unique environment and establish yourself as a subject matter consultant to all levels of the organization.
The position will be a member of the Weyerhaeuser Timberlands Technology Team and will report to the Director of Technology, Southern Timberlands. In this role, you will have a significant impact on our Southern timber business. We are seeking someone who can function both as a valued team member and as an effective leader.
The primary initiatives of the Production Forestry Technology Manager role will include:
Within 60 days:
- interact with the research forester team and learn their skills and strengths
- become intimately familiar with the existing program of work
- conduct field visits to become familiar with Forestry Operations, study designs, trial locations and interactions with research cooperatives
- initiate coordination of internal and cooperative research, oversee data collection and analysis, provide technical support for silvicultural programs
Within 6 months:
- identify critical questions to support Southern Timberlands strategic goals, develop information resources or experimental approaches to evaluate hypotheses, implement efficient projects to obtain the information
- utilize your teamwork and consultative skills to provide ongoing technical support
- coordinate and implement a long term silvilculture research program in coordination with external research organizations, scientists, tree improvement, operational timberlands, marketing, and nurseries
- anticipate and develop personnel resources, plan and track program budgets
Qualifications
- PhD or Masters in forestry, soil science, or closely related field
- Five years in applied forestry research with PhD or seven years with Masters
- Experience conducting research, experimental design and production of actionable techniques
- Experience leading people, teams, programs or significant initiatives
- Strong math, analytical, and financial analysis skills
- Demonstrated ability in technical writing
- Must be willing and able to travel up to 40% based on business needs
Abilities:
- Operational forestry experience and the ability to work in sometimes difficult field conditions
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Ability to work irregular hours with travel up to a week at a time
- Understanding of a broad range of core technologies including tree nutrition and physiology, tree improvement, forest soils, growth and yield, silvicultural systems, and community ecology
- Initiative, demonstrated ability to collaborate and effective team skills
- Effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work safely in forestry or related operations
