Salary: These positions are in pay schedule and range 15-03. Starting pay will be between $24.00 and $26.00 per hour, ($49,920 and $54,080 annually) depending on qualifications plus benefits. Pay on appointment for current or former state employees may vary according to the applicable pay transaction provisions of the Compensation Plan. A 12 month probation period may be required.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently seeking to fill two (2) Deer Biologist positions within the Bureau of Wildlife Management. These positions will be located in the Northern and Western areas of the state. The Northern position will be located in Rhinelander (Oneida County) and the Western position will be located in Black River Falls (Jackson County).
Job Duties: The Deer Biologist positions are responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of deer management work priorities within the assigned area of the state, including the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) and County Deer Advisory Councils (CDAC). Deer management involves using biological and social scientific data to direct management actions needed for deer conservation, as well as, to engage the public in decision-making processes. The deer biologist is a liaison between the central office deer program staff and wildlife management field staff. Additional duties may include assembling deer herd status information, developing outreach activities and materials, organizing staff training sessions, writing property management plans, and interacting with conservation partners, private landowners, and hunters. Under the direction of the Big Game Section Chief, this position will support the work of wildlife biologists, technicians, and limited-term employees performing deer management and public involvement activities. Travel within the assigned area will be frequent, with occasional travel to other locations of the state for meetings, conferences, and workshops.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of wildlife conservation and deer management principles
- Knowledge of wildlife population and harvest survey methodologies
- Knowledge of wildlife habitat management practices;
- Knowledge of advances in hunting equipment technology and deer management research;
- Skill in research methodologies for wildlife management
- Skill in Word processing, spreadsheet, and communication software programs
- Skill in effective communication, interpersonal relations and decision making
- Ability to collect, summarize and present data
