Position: Project Coordinator
Organization: Joint position between Appalachian Headwaters and Green Forests Work
Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia or Charlottesville, Virginia.
Position Overview:
Appalachian Headwaters and Green Forests Work (GFW) are two nonprofit organizations focused on restoring ecosystem services on mined lands in central Appalachia and creating jobs in the process. Successful reestablishment of the native hardwood forests and stream restoration will provide sustainable multi-use resources that will create economic opportunities while enhancing the local and global environment. These two organizations and other partners lead research on reforestation and stream health and implement reforestation and stream rehabilitation projects on surface mined land. The goals of this work are to: 1) mitigate climate change; 2) improve water quality; 3) restore habitat; 4) create economic opportunities; and, 5) empower central Appalachian citizens. These two organizations work in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
This position will be split between the two organizations. The successful candidate will work closely with Headwaters and GFW staff, coal operators, foresters and other project partners to manage current planting projects, secure additional partners to expand reforestation opportunities on mine lands, and work with private landowners, coal operators, conservation/environmental groups, state and federal agencies, and other partners to coordinate the planning, design and implementation of new projects. The position will also be involved with grant proposal and report writing.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a Masters-level degree in an applicable science or policy field. Forestry and/or stream restoration experience preferred but not required. Experience working with diverse partners such as energy companies, landowners, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations would be a plus. This position will require overnight travel, occasional work in the field, public speaking, and development of numerous professional contacts. Strong writing and other communication skills required. Fundraising experience, including grant proposal writing experience, is preferred but not required.
