Position Summary:
The Soil Conservation Technician will assist with planning for, funding, and implementing
conservation practices on agricultural land. These conservation practices will be implemented through Farm Bill programs of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP), and a Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) led by Barry Conservation District.
The position is currently funded for one year by the National Association of Conservation Districts
with the possibility of renewed funding on a yearly basis. Future funding may also become available
through other grant programs or millage funding.
Major Duties:
The Technician will work under local NRCS and MAEAP staff to support their respective programs.
Day to day tasks will vary based upon the specific program and the client’s needs. These include, but are not limited to:
1. Conducting site visits to identify resource concerns, monitor progress, and meet with clients.
2. Developing various plans with the client to meet NRCS and MAEAP specifications (e.g.
conservation plan, emergency plan, nutrient management plan, etc.).
3. Mapping project sites using GIS software.
4. Assisting with application processing, contract modification, eligibility certification, and record
maintenance.
5. Assisting with educational events (e.g. farm field days)
The Technician may also assist with other conservation work as deemed necessary by the Allegan Conservation District Board of Directors.
