MobilizeGreen seeks two conservation minded Urban & Community Forestry Interns to serve 52 weeks in a virtual position within the Eastern region. The U.S. Forest Service’s Eastern Region manages State and Private Forestry programs that provide funding and professional advice to improve the health of both public and private forests. Those assisted include forest landowners, tree owners in cities and towns, non-profit conservation and greening organizations, universities, state forestry agencies, tribes, and natural resource managers.
The RA will work with the Urban and Community Forestry program to provide support to USDA Forest Service program staff and partners including State Forestry agencies, non-profit/community organizations, and local/ underserved/under-resourced communities assisted through various Urban and Community Forestry programs.
The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location: Location is 100% remote within the Eastern Region geographical footprint
Term: 52 weeks, full-time, 40 hours per week starting June 11, 2023
Host Unit: State, Private and Tribal Forestry - Urban and Community Forestry
Duty Station: 100% virtual within the Eastern region footprint (20 states and DC, in the area defined by Minnesota to Maine to Maryland to Missouri)

Position Duties:
- Assist federal and state UCF program coordinators in identifying and assessing opportunities to improve canopy equity and access in disadvantaged communities in the region’s urban areas.
- Utilize a variety of internet based spatial tools to identify and verify tree canopy gaps and community demographics to support state, non-profit, and municipal grant proposals.
- Provide technical writing assistance to partners developing grant proposals and prepare various communication products such as written summaries, factsheets, supporting graphics (predominately photo), and program website/social media content.
- Work on an integrated team of urban forestry program specialists and lead project activities, apply spatial tree canopy mapping and environmental justice tools in natural resources management and apply communication skills in the development of written proposals and science communication products reporting partner/project outcomes supported by USDA Forest Service investments.
Work Conditions:
Assignments are typically completed in an office environment during the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Central Time Zone. Occasional overnight travel may be required for work in urban communities, independently and in teams. The RA will need to dress appropriately for outdoor weather conditions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or greater in Forest Resources/Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or Conservation Biology, within 0-5 years out of school.
- A successful candidate must possess excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication, and project management skills.
- The candidate must be detail-oriented, and be able to quickly prepare written material, upon request, and efficiently shift priorities, when necessary.
- The candidate should be proficient with Microsoft Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Demonstrate aptitude in utilizing various online spatial tools in natural resources management applications, and online community vulnerability assessment tools.
- The candidate should be a self-sufficient self-starter, capable of working independently and in team environments.
- Valid Driver's License.
