Wabash Valley Waterfowl: Mallard and Teal Migration Project – Field Technicians (2)
University of Illinois, Illinois Natural History Survey. Position will be located in the Wabash River region of southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.
Technicians are needed for a project investigating stopover duration and habitat use of spring migrating Mallards in the Wabash River region of southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana. Duties include, but are not limited to: baiting and deploying duck capture traps, rocket netting, taking metrics and banding ducks, deploying radio transmitters, using radio telemetry to track and monitor ducks, equipment maintenance, and data management. Work will involve early mornings (e.g., 4 am departures), long days in the field, and a variable work schedule. Field vehicle and housing provided and overtime is authorized.
Preferred duration: 15 January 2017 through 30 April, 2017. Start and end dates somewhat flexible.
$12.00 per hour
B.S. degree in wildlife science, natural resources, ecology, or a related field. Must be able to tolerate adverse field conditions including trapping/tracking in wet, often muddy habitat, exposure to low temperatures, ice, and potentially difficult terrain. Applicants must be in good physical condition, as work may involve a great deal of walking through sloughs and mudflats as well as carrying heavy (50+ lbs.) equipment. Must possess a strong work ethic, desire to learn, attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor. Applicants must also have a valid driver’s license and some experience with ATVs. Previous field experience identifying duck species and handling, banding, and trapping birds is preferred, but not required.
