DUTIES:
- Conducts resource-related educational functions including but not limited to library programs, fishing clinics, pond and stream management workshops, field days, community stakeholder workshops, career days, and youth organization camps.
- Assist with the development of education materials and handouts for community partners: plans, grant applications, etc.
- Work closely with Community Conservation Team and partners to help citizens identify valuable ways they can connect with fish, forest, and wildlife in their communities.
- Work with partners to integrate green space into the urban environment to provide equitable public access to nature.
- Assist with identifying and implementing strategies to deliver community conservation to underserved populations and communities.
- Assist regional staff and partners to promote the establishment and /or maintenance of demonstration projects.
- Assist with providing technical assistance to private landowners regarding conservation best management practices.
- Attends appropriate department-wide meetings, trainings, professional workshops, and conferences.
- Propose, initiate, and complete an approved project (project scope will be decided between the community conservation intern and the community conservation team based upon the needs of the team and the skills and interests of the intern).
- Provide a presentation summary of experiences and independent project to an appropriate audience before the last day of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
At the undergraduate level the emphasis is on recruitment, career exploration, and introducing top performing students to MDC.
Students are eligible for the program when they meet the following criteria:
- Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing. Students who will be graduating before the internship begins are not eligible.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
- Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.
Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
