SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Crew Leader, Project Manager
BASIC FUNCTION
Homer Environmental restoration technicians work with crew leaders to complete projects in a timely and efficient manner. Our projects are primarily to enhance and create natural areas for clients throughout Chicagoland through installation, invasive species control, and stewardship. This is an hourly position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Primary duties on jobsites:
Mechanical vegetation control with brush cutters and chainsaws
Herbicide vegetation control with backpack sprayers, wicks, and ATV sprayers
Installation of seed, plugs, shrubs, and trees
Prescription burning and brush pile burning
Installation of erosion control blanket etc
Other duties:
Courteous interaction with clients, public, and other staff
Loading and unloading vehicles
Safe mixing and handling of herbicides
Safe driving and navigation of company vehicles
Maintenance of equipment and shop
Homer Environmental staff work throughout the year, and should expect to work between 30 and 60 hours per week depending on work load and weather conditions.
Work requires good physical capability with speed and attentiveness. It requires bending, occasional lifting >50lbs, and carrying backpacks weighing 15-30lbs for extended periods of time. It is outdoors through all seasons, so exposure to high heat in summer, low temperatures in winter, and potential contact with mosquitoes, bees, wasps and poison ivy should be expected. Work is sometimes in wetland areas requiring use of knee-boots or waders.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field; or in progress
Experience:
Utilization of hand tools and small machinery including chainsaws, brush cutters and ATV’s a plus
Native plant identification, herbicide application and prescribed burning a plus
Certifications:
State issued driver’s license with good record
Illinois Pesticide Operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days
