SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Project Managers/Chief Operating Officer
Supervises: Restoration Technicians and Seasonal Staff
BASIC FUNCTION
Manage crews to complete work as efficiently as possible while maintaining the highest standards of quality and workmanship. Our projects are primarily to enhance and create natural areas for clients throughout Chicagoland through installation, invasive species control, and stewardship. This is an hourly position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Primary duties on jobsites:
- Maintain a high level of professional conduct and a positive attitude while supervising staff, and while interacting with the public and Homer Environmental Clients
- Assist with field training of Restoration Technicians and Seasonal Staff
- Mechanical vegetation control with brush cutters and chainsaws
- Herbicide vegetation control with backpack sprayers, wicks, and ATV sprayers
- Installation of seed, plugs, shrubs, and trees
- Prescription burning and brush pile burning
- Installation of erosion control blanket etc
Other duties:
- Communication with Project Managers for scheduling, site assessments and monitoring
- Completion of daily work and herbicide reports
- Loading and unloading vehicles
- Safe mixing and handling of herbicides
- Safe driving and navigation of company vehicles
- Maintenance of equipment and shop
Homer Environmental staff work throughout the year, and should expect to work between 30 and 60 hours per week depending on work load and weather conditions.
Work requires good physical capability with speed and attentiveness. It requires bending, occasional lifting >50lbs, and carrying backpacks weighing 15-30lbs for extended periods of time. It is outdoors through all seasons, so exposure to high heat in summer, low temperatures in winter, and potential contact with mosquitoes, bees, wasps and poison ivy should be expected. Work is sometimes in wetland areas requiring use of knee-boots or waders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field.
Experience:
- Two to five years of in-the-field experience.
- Experience in lieu of education, not visa versa.
Certifications/Skills:
- Valid Illinois Herbicide/Pesticide Operator’s or Applicator's license.
- Chicago Wilderness Prescription Burn Training or S130/190.
- Native and invasive plant identification.
- Valid state issued driver’s license with good driving record.
- Able to get a DOT Medical Examiner’s certificate
- Class A CDL a plus but not required
- Experience in the operation of chainsaws, brushcutters, and backpack sprayers.
- Experience in operation of heavy equipment -- skid steer, tractors etc. a plus
