Objective
The intern will contribute to ongoing Aquarium research exploring how the microbiome of animal habitats can be managed to benefit the animals in our care.
Summary
The Shedd Aquarium Microbiome Project seeks to identify aquarium management practices that promote beneficial microbial communities in our animal habitats. An important first step is characterizing the microbiome, or tiny environment, that can be found in water systems. The Aquarium and its partners are currently surveying the microbiome of animal habitats to begin to understand “who’s there.”
Research takes place in the Aquarium’s own state-of-the-art laboratory. Capabilities include Illumina high- throughput DNA sequencing, quantitative PCR and robotic fluid handling. The lab team works closely with Shedd’s environmental monitoring and animal care staff to study this unique “built environment.”
Responsibilities & Duties
- Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and
- Collect samples as directed. This could include filling sterile bottles with water, swabbing surfaces for biofilms and removing small amounts of substrate such as sand or filter media.
- Using sterile technique, filter water samples using either a vacuum filtration apparatus or syringe and filter
- Accurately record key data elements such as time and place of collection and sample storage
- Assist with water chemistry testing and monitoring of physiochemical parameters as-needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with Laboratory
- Collaborate with the Lab Manager, Postdoctoral Associate and Graduate Student as part of a dynamic team.
Projects May Include
- Participation in a new study investigating the impact of water treatment on the microbiome of an exhibit system, focused on how our disinfection practices impact beneficial as well as unwanted
- Additional projects may be based upon intern’s professional development goals. These could include everything from molecular biology techniques to education and outreach related to the lab’s
Qualifications
