Dixon Springs Agricultural Center, Pope County, IL Forestry Technician
The University of Illinois NRES Extension Forestry Program is seeking to hire a full-time Academic Hourly position to serve as a Forestry Technician at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Pope County, IL. This position will conduct forest management research and provide educational outreach. Pay based upon experience.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the leadership of the Extension Forester, help to plan and carry out educational and outreach services to citizens and land- owners of Southern Illinois pertaining to forest management and land stewardship.
- Under the leadership of the Extension Forester, help provide off- campus experiential learning opportunities as directed by NRES and other college students by hosting field trips and
- Under the leadership of the Extension Forester, help assess the equipment, land and buildings assigned to NRES and make improvements in consultation with the NRES Department Head to include such things as building upkeep and repair, outbuilding clean out, and grounds maintenance.
- Facilitate the ongoing collection of data for the National Weather Service and National Atmospheric Deposition Program monitoring sites at DSAC.
- Plan and carry out forest inventory and mapping in support of research to include basic forest plots for tree species, basal area, regeneration,
- Assist in collecting data as part of research implemented by the Extension Forestry Program, including floristic surveys.
- Implement invasive control treatments, including herbicide applications, as part of ongoing research and installation of demonstration areas.
- Plan and carry out thinning regimes of different intensities for forest management research and demonstration.
- Have primary responsibility for maintaining tree plantings (existing and new) for use as demonstrations and research
- Utilize GIS to collect data, create maps, and track research plot locations
- Perform other duties that contribute to the DSAC programming/management as assigned.
Education:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in forestry or another natural resource-related field
Experience:
- Required: At least 12 months of research or outreach experience
