Job Description:
Serve as the primary coordinator for information between DNR biologists, Conservation Officers and other agencies in spills that may threaten fish and wildlife. In some cases, the position will assist or direct the collection of stream and fish data to assess fish and wildlife injury. The biologist will serve as a case manager to pursue recovery of damages from loss of wildlife, recreational use, and associated costs. With settlement monies and agreements, the Restoration Coordinator will develop restoration projects which are designed to facility the recovery of fisheries and aquatic wildlife in the injured area.
Work is predominantly conducted in the office, however, there are regular occurrences of statewide travel for fish kill investigations, restoration project development, permitting coordination, compliance inspections, and Environmental Site Assessment. The biologist works closely with Conservation Officers, DNR legal staff, IDEM Emergency Response and Case Enforcement staff, USDA-NRCS, and other conservation partners.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the coordinator of spill information on chemical spill cases that threaten fish and wildlife interests;
- Pursue administrative or coordinate legal action on cases of injury to fish & wildlife resources;
- Develop or complete supplemental environmental projects (SEPs) or restoration projects to restore fish and aquatic wildlife resources injured in chemical spills;
- Coordinate follow-up investigations that may include water sampling, post-incident fishery survey, and on-site potential for wildlife injury assessment, and/or other case-relevant activities;
- Record all case events in a database;
- Annually inspect for compliance the Conservation Easements and other restoration projects that were established as a result of case settlements.
- Perform Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments for properties the Division is considering for purchase or gift.
- Serve on the Fish Consumption Advisory Team that involves Dept. of Health, IDEM, and DNR
- Regularly inspect these restoration projects to ensure compliance with agreements and settlements. All fish kill cases are tracked from incident to resolution or settlement using a database.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, or a closely related field, with specialized knowledge of biological principals, ecological variables and interactions, and life histories of fish and wildlife species developed through on the job training and relevant experience.
- Seven (7) years work experience in program coordination; development; implementation; or accredited college training in a related field.
- Must possess a valid Indiana driver's license.
- Excellent oral & written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize variable workloads and multiple projects.
- GIS experience is highly preferred.
