Seasonal Environmental Technician
Upper Sioux Community
Salary: $12 - $14.50/hr
Term: Monitoring Season 2017 – Approximately 3-month position, depending on workload.
The Upper Sioux Community seeks a self-motivated individual to assist with monitoring and assessing river and stream water quality and other environmental and natural resource related projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist with the manual collection of river and stream water quality data;
2. Assist with the calibration, operation, and maintenance of water monitoring equipment;
3. Deliver of water samples to laboratory;
4. Assist with GPS of sites and natural resources;
5. Assist with natural resources work, including invasive species removal; and
6. Other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be willing to learn and take direction and possess the ability to work independently. The Seasonal Environmental Technician must have the ability to walk on uneven terrain associated with natural areas, be willing to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, and be able to wade in streams and wetlands. Must have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance. Must qualify for Upper Sioux Community insurance coverage.
Ideal Qualifications:
Applicants will possess, or be actively pursuing, education in water resources, environmental science, soil science, or related natural resources field. Familiarity with various computer software, including spreadsheet and database programs.
Work Environment:
Work involves office (10-15%), sample delivery driving Dept. truck (10-15%), and outside field work (70-80%). Frequent position changes; lifting, pushing, and pulling requirement more than 20 pounds on a regular basis; exposures not limited to heat, cold, and wet conditions; and use of the senses of sight and smell are necessary in this work. Equipment used include, but not limited to, general office equipment including telephone, and computers as well as field equipment such as water monitoring units, GPS equipment, lap top computers, etc. Reports to the Environmental Specialist for daily assignments and to the Environmental Director on a regular basis.
