Fish Hatchery Aid (Two Positions Available)
Mead Fish Hatchery, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism
Salary: $10.68 to $11.98/hr
Two temporary positions (2 positions up to 999 hours) are located at the Meade Fish Hatchery and are directly supervised by Jason Vajnar, Hatchery Manager. The dates of employment vary. One position is to be filled as soon as possible and go through July or August. The second position will run from May until the end of October.
The incumbents will be involved with all culture phases required for the production of assigned fish species. Job duties include but not limited to: assisting the manager and/or biologist in the daily care and rearing of a variety of fish species that will be stocked into Kansas’ waters. Duties can include spawning of adult fish, feeding, measuring growth, observing behavior of juvenile fish, daily cleaning of rearing units, and collecting forage for use as fish food. Daily data collection is also required. Assist with harvest and distribution of species as requested by fisheries management, answer questions and give tours to public as needed. Majority of the duties will include assisting the biologist with on-going intensive walleye research project. This includes larviculture, and intermediate production in a Recirculating Aquaculture System. In addition, a large proportion of duties will include grounds, buildings, and vehicle maintenance, as well as assisting the biologist on other special projects. Weekend work will be required on a rotational basis.
BENEFITS:
Hourly salary, $10.68 to $11.98/hr. depending on experience and length of commitment; limited to 40 hours/week; no paid holidays. As a condition of employment, the employee is offered on-site apartment style housing on a rent basis.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; must be a minimum of 18 years of age; able to work alone, with the public, in all conditions; on weekends, nights, and evenings as required; able to withstand physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying 50 lbs., bending, or hauling; work with minimal supervision and be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, demonstrate responsible behavior and attention to detail; follow policy and cooperate with supervisors and co-workers. Familiarity with operation of power tools, hand tools, tractors, mowers, and heavy trucks preferred. Preference will be given to those graduated or currently enrolled in a natural resource degree, or those having a keen interest in a biological, conservation, or environmental science program.
