Nationwide is hiring an Environmental Claims Specialist in Downer’s Grove, IL. Qualified Candidates MUST HAVE strong computer, organization, writing, and analytical skills. Insurance or Casualty experience is a big plus
JOB SUMMARY: Investigates and resolves specialty claims (environmental, asbestos, toxic tort, pollution, etc.) of low to moderate complexity. Responsible for the handling of claims in accordance with prescribed authority and adhering to best claims practices. Adheres to high standards of professional conduct consistent with the delivery of superior service. Work is performed under moderate supervision.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Claims Manager. No direct reports.
CORE JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Handles to conclusion claims of low to moderate complexity and makes decisions within delegated claims settlement and authority.
- Conducts liability and damage investigations of reported claims. Organizes account folder according to guidelines.
- Determines proper policy coverages and applies best claims practices to conclude assigned cases in accordance with company guidelines.
- Brings files to closure, either by voluntary dismissals or by negotiation of settlements.
- Determines amount of appropriate settlements or grounds for denial. Assists in the drafting of settlement documents.
- Assists in negotiating cost share agreements between other insurance carriers and policyholders.
- Submits severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information to home office, claims management, and underwriting.
- Partners with SIU and Subrogation to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.
- Maintains current knowledge of insurance and applicable product/services; court decisions which may affect the claims function; current guidelines in the claims function; and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars and/or training sessions.
- Promotes and provides "On Your Side" customer service experience to internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Studies toward professional designations, such as AIC, ARE, CPCU, IIA, and/or AEI preferred.
Experience: One to three years of property/casualty claims experience desired. Prefer some exposure to asbestos, environmental and/or commercial claims processes.
Knowledge: General knowledge of property casualty and/or life/health underwriting practices and policies/policy content. General knowledge of technical nomenclature and various state regulations. General knowledge of regulatory and legal issues in claims
Skills/Competencies: Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Advanced oral and written communication skills for interaction with technical experts, insured's, federal agencies, the legal profession and other insurance companies. Ability to operate a personal computer and related business and claims software.

JOB CONDITIONS:
Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible)
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Must be able to make physical inspection of loss sites, work irregular hours and travel with possible overnight requirements.
