Forestry Intern (Park Ridge, IL)

Salary: $11/hr
Job Description: The City of Park Ridge's Forestry Division is seeking qualified student applicants for a 2018 summer intern position. Under the supervision of the City Forester, duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Update existing inventory of city trees, including data collection using tablet and measuring tools
- Assist with tree preservation and site development plan reviews/permits
- Conduct field surveys for Dutch elm disease, pest infestations and tree maintenance needs
- Perform related tasks as needed
Desired Skills: ability to identify various local tree species; basic understanding of urban forestry and arboricultural practices; and familiarity with GPS/GIS. Insect and disease diagnosis is a plus. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications: Position requires current enrollment in, or recent graduation from, a 2 or 4 year program in Forestry, Horticulture, Natural Resources, or related field. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license and be able to work outside in various summer weather conditions (rain, extreme heat and wind).
General work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. (37.5 hours per week) beginning in May and lasting approximately 12 weeks. Starting rate is $11/hour. Position is open until filled.
