Job Description: The Outreach and Education Assistant functions as part of a team to perform professional and administrative duties required to implement the Lake Michigan Coastal Program (LMCP) within the DNR’s Division of Nature Preserves. The Outreach and Education Assistant will assist the LMCP team and Special Projects Coordinator in three areas: 1) Outreach and Education communications, coordination, planning, and implementation (LCMP Team), 2) Good Neighbor Outreach and Neighborhood Ambassador programs (Special Projects Coordinator), 3) Coastal Training Program assistance with marketing, scheduling and planning for presentations to LMCP stakeholders (LCMP Team).
Job Responsibilities:
LCMP Outreach and Education:
- Develop outreach materials, assist with and coordinate Coastal Program outreach events
- Assist in developing and maintaining regular communications that highlight LMCP accomplishments
- Contribute ideas to enhance communications and outreach efforts
- Coordinate Coastal Awareness Month
- Provide assistance to Operations Manager and other staff on website updates
- Work with staff to identify training needs and assist in scheduling workshops
- Work with DNR Communications team to ensure that all communications meet their guidelines
Good Neighbor Outreach and Neighborhood Ambassador Program (319 grant funded homeowner awareness and encouragement to maintain their septic systems and obtain regular inspections):
- Provide assistance to Special Projects Coordinator in convening the Septic System Coordination Work Group and 319 Grant Steering Committee, including outreach and meeting coordination
- Assist the Special Project Coordinator in developing, interviewing, training and managing the Neighborhood Ambassador Program
- Coordinate distribution of Good Neighbor and SepticSmart outreach materials to Neighborhood Ambassadors
- Develop news articles, website and other outreach material content, which adheres to DNR Communications team guidelines
- Assist in development of community and information sharing events
Coastal Training Program:
- Assist the LMCP team in scheduling and planning presentations and marketing the Coastal Training Program
- Assist the LMCP team in marketing the Coastal Training Program to stakeholders and decision-makers
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science or Art from an accredited university or college in communication, environmental education, environmental policy, environmental science, natural resources, or equivalent experience
- Experience in implementing Outreach and Education programs
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders and communities
- Broad knowledge of Great Lakes physical and biological systems and coastal processes
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Ability to work on numerous projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends when events and initiatives occur outside normal business hours
- Must have valid driver’s license
- Must be able to work outdoors under all types of weather and terrain conditions
- May be expected to travel to all parts of the state for meetings and project dutie
