Position Summary:
The position will assist with delivering conservation and habitat restoration projects on private lands throughout Southwest Virginia to enhance and protect the aquatic resource and benefit federal trust species and other associated wildlife. The Habitat Restoration Technician will assist in planning, survey, design, and implementation of grant-funded restoration projects. This is an ecologically-oriented position that supports projects as part of a small, fast-paced, and dynamic team. Project goals may include riparian habitat enhancement, stream bank stabilization/stream restoration, fish barrier removal, pollinator meadow creation, and Ag BMP installation. This work involves close cooperation with project partners, agencies, and landowners; field work in remote locations for several days at a time; and budget constraints and deadlines. The position is based in Abingdon, VA, and will require significant travel throughout Southwest Virginia.
Major Duties:
- Field survey, assessment, and implementation of restoration projects in all weather conditions
- Assist in the development of project plans, GIS maps, plan sheets, Civil3Ddrawings, and survey data management & assessment
- Monitor, document, and report on ongoing and completed restoration projects
- Assist with environmental permitting and compliance for restoration projects
- Assist in conducting physical, chemical, and biological survey & monitoring
- Collaborate on grant writing and sources of funding
- Assist in development and delivery of outreach and environmental education activities
