Job Description:The student can enroll with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES), or through the Program for Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology (PEEC). The successful candidate will also spend time conducting research at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), Great Rivers Field Station in Alton, IL.
Responsibilities: Potential dissertation topics include a wide variety ecology and management issues relevant to fish communities in the Upper Mississippi River, such as invasive species, long-term sport fish population and community dynamics, habitat restoration, and ancient sport fishes (e.g., gar). The successful candidate will have access to long-term data from two monitoring programs, lab facilities, and sampling equipment for working in large-floodplain rivers.
Job Qualifications: M.S. degree in fisheries ecology, aquatic ecology, or related field, and experience with sampling fishes in freshwater ecosystems. Candidates with proven experience and skills in written and oral communication, quantitative analysis, and the ability to work in collaborative teams are preferred. Applicants must be self-motivated, demonstrate a passion for fisheries and ecological research, be physically capable of working long hours in demanding outdoor conditions, and be willing to assist with all aspects of monitoring and research work required by the agencies funding this assistantship.
