Across the Chicago Region, communities are voluntarily taking steps to become more sustainable and help make their communities attractive places to live and work. These steps are outlined in the Greenest Region Compact (GRC), a partnership between the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (Caucus) and the 100+ municipalities who are working every day to as stewards of the environment, community and local economic vitality. The Greenest Region Corps is a new partnership between the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and AmeriCorps to find enthusiastic members to lead sustainability projects in a select group of Chicago region communities. Greenest Region Corps members will work directly for a community on a project that will result in greater environmental awareness and stewardship. Members will be recruited and administered by the Mayors Caucus, but will be placed directly in one of eight community locations. In addition, members will receive training and mentoring from staff at the USEPA Region 5 Office in Chicago and Moraine Valley Community College. The program is anticipated to start in October 2018 and members must complete 1,700 service hours by December 2019. Members will be paid a living allowance and will be provided health insurance. Upon completion of the program, members will be eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Educational Award. The Greenest Region Corps is AmeriCorps funded, and is a project of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Serve Illinois Commission.
Each member of the Greenest Region Corps will focus on one or more of the following work areas: Sustainability Planning; Recycling; Energy Efficiency; and Urban Forestry. Based on their placement members will be responsible for a range of activities and tasks, including but not limited to community engagement and outreach, data collection and analysis, community education, and helping to write and/or update municipal sustainability plans.
