Full-time seasonal horticulture internship in Niles, MI

Compensation: $10/hr
Job Description:
Applications are being accepted for Fernwood’s 11-week Horticulture and Landscape Management Internship. This paid position provides a unique opportunity for students to gain practical work experience and exposure to the world of public horticulture and various aspects of natural areas management while building a strong skillset for future employment in the field of public horticulture and land management. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in selected Fernwood programs and events as well as weekly tutorials in gardening techniques and plant collection management.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform various landscape and garden maintenance tasks such as but not limited to: general garden bed care, pruning, weeding, planting, mowing, mulching, watering, fertilizing, tree and shrub care, potting, label making and installation.
- Implementation of invasive species control protocols throughout the preserve.
- Trail maintenance such as sawing and removal of fallen tree limbs, chipping, setting posts and signage replacement and repair.
- Coordinate weekly work activity with Manager of Collections & Grounds.
Assist with event planning and implementation.
Qualifications / Skills:
All interested students are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those with the following:
- Access to a car with a valid driver’s license.
- Current enrollment in a college or university studying public garden management, horticulture, forestry, landscape management, landscape architecture, restoration ecology or related subject.
- Interest and motivation to learn more about plants and the environment.
Compensation and Work Schedule:
$10.00/hour
Full-time temporary duration from May – September, 37.5 hours/week (flexible start and end time)
