Regional Biologist, Ducks Unlimited

Overview:
Ducks Unlimited is seeking an experienced wildlife biologist to oversee habitat conservation programs in Michigan. The incumbent will become part of a highly-motivated team of biologists, engineers, public policy experts, scientific researchers and other resource professionals responsible for the protection, restoration and enhancement of wetland and other associated habitats in Michigan.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities include initiation, coordination, and delivery of public and private wetland conservation projects and other conservation activities in Michigan. Project initiation includes developing relationships with public agencies, private landowners, and other conservation groups to establish and maintain successful partnerships with DU to restore and enhance wetlands and associated habitats. Project delivery includes coordinating with agency partners, landowners, non-government organizations, DU engineering staff, contractors and permitting agencies to ensure timely and on-budget completion of projects. Management of Michigan program budget, negotiation of project agreements, field monitoring and data entry through DU ‘s business information systems is also required.
The Regional Biologist will be responsible for writing funding proposals to various public agencies, foundations, corporations and others to support conservation activities in Michigan, and will also be responsible for the administration of grant awards. In addition, the incumbent will promote DU’s mission and accomplishments to DU members, volunteers, major donors, partners, elected leaders and media contacts. The incumbent also will assist with volunteer events, major donor fundraising, public policy efforts, and the development of outreach, education, and communication pieces. Establishing and maintaining long-term successful relationships with conservation partners and funding entities is essential. This position requires frequent work out-of-doors, possibly in inclement weather, and may require physical exertion or lifting as needed. Overnight travel required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of wetland and waterfowl ecology, natural resource conservation, and the management of wetland and native grassland habitats.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal conservation programs and policies (especially NAWCA, GLRI and Farm Bill) used to protect and restore wetlands and grasslands.
- Demonstrated skills in written communication, public speaking and establishing good working relationships with landowners, partners and other professional colleagues.
- Proven ability to secure grant funding, prepare funding reports, and manage detailed budgets.
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree (M.S. preferred) in Wildlife Biology, Ecology or related natural resources field with at least two years of professional work experience.
