The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a job vacancy for a Natural Resouce Technician 2 position, within the Wildlife Bureau located at Rockwell City Service Center in Rockwell City, IA.
Make contact with private landowners through personal contacts, referrals from NRCS technical staff, and informational meetings. From these contacts, develop long term plans to improve wildlife habitat and wildlife populatins on their properties. Practices implemented also improve water quality and reduce soil erosion. Provide information regarding Federal, State, and local programs that are available for funding assistance.
Work with USDA from FSA and NRCS to deliver cost-shared conservation practices on private lands. Assist NRCS staff in preparing applications for funding assistance under ACEP, WHIP, and EQIP federal cost-share programs. Develop habitat management plans for the installed conservation practices including burn plans and mid-contract management plans. Review conservation plans with landownders to ensure all standards of the conservation practices are met.
Contract all necessary wildlife habitat management activities on farms enrolled in the Iowa Habitat and Access Program (IHAP) for a multi-county area in northwest Iowa. Install appropriate signs and other access facilities necessary to provide responsible public use of IHAP sites.
Conduct habitat information programs and workshops with County Conservation Boards, Federal Conservation Agencies, Non-governmental conservation organizations, farm and landowner groups, county fairs, and other events to explain wildlife habitat management practices appropriate to private land.
Prepare informational packets for interested landowners with aerial photos locating wildlife habitat management practices that can be implemented to improve specific wildlife species on their land.
Design, implement and monitor management activities for the Wildlife Bureau's wildlife damage program. Provide technical services to landowners and organizations in the prevention and control of wildlife damage. Complete management plans for all landowners and tenant that meet minimum damage qualifications. Issue deer depredation licenses and/or shooting permits to landownders to help address deer management problems where appropriate. Work with cities, state parks, etc., to set up special deeer and/or goose hunts where appropriate. Work with cities and landowners to address goose management problems.
Carry out public relations activities to provide information and education to the public about the Fish and Wildlife Bureaus including the Private Lands Program and the Wildlife Damage Management Program and other assigned duties.
Key Abilities and Skills:
1. Advises NRCS technical staff and private landowners in formulating conservation plans that benefit wildlife and enhance wildlife habitat.
2. Contracts required habitat establishment and management activities on farms enrolled in the Iowa Habitat and Access Program.
3. Conducts wildlife damage investigations independently, often involving strenuous work and work under inclement conditions.
4. Advises private landowners and communities of available wildlife management techniques and state and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they related to wildlife resources.
5. Maintains knowledge of basic state and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to wildlife resources.
6. Maintain high standad of ethical conduct.
7. Valid driver's license required.

The starting salary for the Natural Resource Technician 2 will be at the base of the pay range, $40,580.80 annually. Typical Hours are 8am-4:30pm M-F, but will have evening/weekend/holiday work as needed and occasional in-state travel. The starting salary for new state (Executive Branch) employees will be at the base of the pay range.

Selectives:
901 Wildlife Biology
6 months' experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
The equivalent of three years of full time experience involving facilities maintenance in plumbing, electrical, and/or heating and cooling, or technical work in a biological, horticultural, conservation, or natural resources program;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting 30 semester hours of college level course work in a biological or natural resources program for each year of the required experience;
or
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of 12 months of full-time experience as a Natural Resources Technician 1 shall be considered as qualified.
