Hourly Summer Work: Water Sampling Technician
Researchers at the UIC School of Public Health will be testing water samples from Chicago’s beaches, seven days per week, this summer. Employees must be willing to work on average one weekend shift per week and two weekends per month. Employees must be highly dependable, able to work under time pressure, and they will work closely with other members of the research team. This position will begin on May 15 and end on Labor Day (September 2, 2019). Hourly salary will be determined by the UIC graduate salary requirements.
Water sampling technicians will drive to approximately 6-8 beaches and collect water samples following a research protocol. Water samples will be collected, and beach conditions will be entered into an online portal. Samples will be delivered to the UIC School of Public Health Water Microbiology Laboratory for analysis. This will involve a total of 15-30 miles of driving per day. Technicians will begin work at approximately 5:30 AM (sunrise), and finish at approximately 8:30 AM. In addition to the hourly salary, water sampling technicians will also be paid for miles driven at the UIC mileage rate of $0.55/mile. They will also be paid an additional $3/per day for entering data about beach conditions using their personal cell phone.
Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in a UIC undergraduate or graduate degree program. Successful applicants must have their own vehicle, valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a good driving record. This position was sent by an NRES alum.
