IDOT Bat Field Technician - Illinois Natural History Survey at UIUC (due 3/13)
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking an undergraduate hourly to assist with bat work for the summer of 2020 and potentially beyond. The position will be based in Champaign, Illinois. Housing is not provided, but there are many summer sublets available.
Salary
$12.00/hr up to 20hrs/week while classes are in session.
Job Duties
The majority of the fieldwork will involve searching for bats under bridges and performing bat habitat assessments, including identifying potential bat roost trees. Assist with mist-netting bats at night. Potentially trapping small mammals. The technician will prioritize bridge assessment tasking, determine routes to field sites, edit and write reports. Fieldwork will occur throughout Illinois. Overnight work may be required (lodging and per diem provided for overnight travel).
Qualifications
Must be working on a degree in Ecology, Wildlife, Natural Resources, or related field. Previous experience conducting fieldwork is preferred. Meticulous data collection and the ability to work efficiently and effectively is expected. Ability to identify trees, previous experience with GPS units, and the ability to identify bats of Illinois are all preferred, but we will provide training as necessary. The ability to read and navigate from maps is highly desirable. Rabies shots preferred but are not required; only technicians with rabies shots will be permitted to handle animals. The candidate must be physically capable of hiking to sites, carrying up to 40 lbs. of field equipment, and working outside under adverse field conditions, including, but not limited to biting insects, rain, heat, humidity, and uneven terrain. The ability to work outside at field sites at night is required. The technician must be able to work with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. The technician must have a valid driver’s license.
