Position Summary:
The person in this position serves as a Drinking Water Unit Technician for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Division of Environmental Health (DEH) Drinking Water Investigation Unit (DWIU). This position provides community outreach and engagement support to the DWIU. The Drinking Water Unit Technician will play a critical role in ensuring health protective information and resources are communicated clearly and consistently in communities throughout Michigan. In addition, the Department Technician will assist in the tracking of project and grant reporting activities and support other DWIU and DEH activities as needed. The Drinking Water Unit Technician will work closely with the DWIU manager, DWIU staff, DEH health educators, and internal and external partners.
Major Duties:
- Work with the DWIU Private Well Investigation Coordinator and DEH health educators to implement Michigan private well owner outreach activities as outlined in the MiWell Program Communications Plan.
- Collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders including Michigan local health departments, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), university extension programs, schools, planning commissions, conservation districts, environmental and public health nonprofits, and other identified stakeholders to conduct drinking water outreach events and activities.
- Attend a wide variety of events to promote MDHHS drinking water outreach materials and educate the general public, including Michigan youth.
- Attend and occasionally present at relevant conferences including the Michigan Association for Environmental Health Annual Education Conference and the Michigan Premier Public Health Conference.
- Assist with the development of educational materials, social media posts, animations, and other outreach for both public and private drinking water supplies.
- Identify and cultivate relationships with community members, groups, and stakeholders.
- Work with the DWIU Private Well Investigation Coordinator to assist with CDC grant funded activities.
- Assist with program evaluation and tracking of grant activities as needed to aid in the development of semi-annual and final reports.
- Provides additional support to the Division of Environmental Health as requested.
- Assist with scheduling of water sampling appointments for DWIU sanitarians as needed.
- Work with DWIU staff to track and report unit activities and metrics as requested.
- Represent the best interest of MDHHS and MPHI at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
