Job Description
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking TWO fisheries technicians to conduct data collection on various projects related to the ecology of sport fishes in Illinois. The primary responsibility of the technician involves the collection, processing, and interpretation of fisheries data. Duties may include conducting collections of freshwater fish in east-central Illinois using boat electrofishing and fyke nets; preparing samples for fish aging, determining age estimates, and performing basic data entry, processing, and analyses (training provided, if needed); assisting with research pond draining, fish husbandry, and miscellaneous maintenance of husbandry infrastructure, sampling gear, boats and motors as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, aquatic ecology, or natural resources field preferred. Applicant must be willing and able to: 1) work outside under a variety of field and environmental conditions; 2) travel throughout Illinois with overnight hotel stays (at project expense); 3) show good organizational and self-motivational skills; 4) experience working on and trailering boats is preferred; 5) experience using ArcGIS and R is preferred. Must possess a valid automobile driver’s license.
Salary: $12.00 -$15.00 per hour depending on experience, up to 40 hours per week.
