  • Summer Research Opportunities (SROP) (summer 2024), Big Ten Academic Alliance (various locations including Urbana-Champaign; due Feb. 10)

    The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a gateway to graduate education at Big Ten Academic Alliance universities. The goal of the program aims to increase the number of underrepresented students who are pursuing graduate study and research careers. SROP helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities. 

  • 2024 Seasonal (summer) Ecological Technicians, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (Pratt, KS; due Dec. 29)

    Positions will be available for up to 12 technicians creating 3 separate crews. Incumbents will be performing aquatic or terrestrial surveys, dependent upon their assigned crew, across the state, specifically related to native Kansas fauna. Crews have the potential to conduct the following activities: (1) surveying for native mussels in their historical range throughout Kansas (2) assessment of threatened and endangered aquatic species statewide; (3) surveying for state-threatened species of reptiles and amphibians in appropriate habitats; (4) survey bats and small mammal communities using appropriate methods and procedures (5) conduct standardized aquatic surveys of fish and macroinvertebrate communities in public and/or private areas. Some lab work involving the identification, sorting, and cataloging of collected specimens obtained from surveys may be required. Assist with conducting educational events for students of various ages. Maintaining good working relationships with other institutions and personnel will be required. Perform other duties as required

  • LTER Plant Community Ecology Internships (summer 2024), Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (East Bethel, MN; due Feb. 19)

    The Cedar Creek LTER (Long Term Ecological Research Network) has several opportunities for students to work as plant community ecology interns. Most positions run from June through August, but some interns are needed as early as March, and some are needed through October. Your educational institution may be able to approve this internship, with an appropriate independent project, for any field biology requirement of your major. As a research intern, you will contribute to ongoing field experiments, may have the opportunity to initiate individual research, attend scientific seminars, and interact with professors, post-docs, and graduate students. If you are an undergraduate or a newly graduated student with a background or interest in biology, ecology, environmental science, botany, environmental education, or related field we encourage you to apply.

    Pay is $15.00 per hour. Typical workdays are eight hours Monday through Friday; however, some projects require weekend, early morning, and evening work. Most of the work you do will be out in the field, though a few jobs have indoor laboratory or computer components. On-site dormitory housing is available to rent.

  • REU Understanding Coastal Ecosystems - From the Everglades to the Coral Reefs (summer 2024), Florida International University (Miami, FL; due Jan. 30)

    The Coastal Ecosystems Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site program is a 10-week paid research fellowship located on the campuses of Florida International University in Miami, FL. This year's program runs from May 20, 2024 - July 26, 2024.

    The Research Theme of the REU Site is the ecology of coastal ecosystems across gradients of human impact.  Specifically, our research looks at coastal ecosystem ecology, water quality, and the connections among the Everglades wetlands, coastal mangrove forests, seagrass beds and shallow water coral reefs. Our goal is to detect the sources, transport and transformation of environmental stressors and the ecosystem responses under rapid changing climate and land-use.

    The summer research experience for undergraduates includes a stipend of $6000 plus a $1200 food allowance for successful completion of the full 10-week program, as well as roundtrip travel to Miami and campus housing. For summer 2024, research opportunities will be based on the Modesto A Maidique Campus in west Miami.

  • Camp Counselor/Naturalist (summer 2024), Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (open until filled)

    We are hiring summer counselor/naturalists to serve as educators, caretakers, and mentors for the 2024 season. The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station is a field station supported by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources and the UWSP Foundation, Inc. The Station is operated year-round by permanent staff and university students as an environmental education center for people of all ages. 

  • Watershed Management Research and Outreach Undergraduate Internship Program (summer 2024), North Central Region Water Network (several locations including Champaign, IL; due Dec. 8)

    While the internships will range in location, topic, and format, they each will provide students with broader perspectives and experience in water-related research and extension education. Students will gain real world experience with the complexities and trade-offs associated with water-related decisions in rural and urban landscapes.  In addition, students will get to know the interns in other locations across the region and participate in multistate exchanges exposing them to other ecoregions, agriculture and municipal systems, universities, and cultural contexts. As students are exposed to opportunities in extension, the program will develop interest in individuals for water management related careers outside of dedicated research.

  • Illinois Natural History Survey - Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Sponsored by the National Science Foundation (Summer 2024) (Application Deadline February 5, 2024)

    The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program sponsored by the National Science Foundation supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the Foundation. The Illinois Natural History Survey (Prairie Research Institute) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking undergraduate students who want to be involved in an ongoing research project focused on the detection and characterization of phytoplasmas, a group of bacteria associated with insects (vectors, primarily Hemiptera) and plants (hosts) and implicated in plant disease.

  • Environmental Protection Program Intern (Summer 2024), Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, IL; recommend applying by Dec. 15 but later applications accepted)

    Interns will assist staff in implementing the EPP in one or more of the above areas with appropriate guidance, oversight, and training.

  • Council on Environmental Quality Internship Program, The White House (Washington, DC; due Feb. 29 for Summer 2024)

    CEQ interns are supervised by CEQ staff, and provide critical research and writing assistance on a range of environmental policies such as: implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), environmental justice, sustainability, climate change, resilience, public lands, water, and transportation. Through CEQ’s participation in policy processes across the Federal government, interns have the opportunity to perform diverse and substantive policy work. Duties include but are not limited to: researching policy issues; assisting the staff in drafting fact sheets, memos, and blogs; attending meetings; liaising with external stakeholders; managing projects; performing administrative tasks; and other duties as assigned.  The office environment is fast paced, so accuracy and attention to detail are absolute requirements.

  • Reforestation Technician, Wildlife Technician, and other Summer 2024 Internships at Sierra Pacific Industries (CA, WA or OR; due Feb. 16, 2024)

    Selected interns help SPI’s Reforestation Professionals to implement the establishment and maintenance of our planted forests to ensure they flourish and produce high quality timber products for our sawmills. The Reforestation Intern’s primary duties include: aiding in area layout and preparation, vegetation cover assessments, stocking surveys, and plantation thinning administration.  Opportunities also include working with SPI’s Vegetation Management Specialists to establish and maintain our fuel break network and landscape fuels reduction areas to ensure the protection and long-term health of our forests. Interns will also have the opportunity to spend time at our new state-of-the-art nursery and aid in our advanced tree improvement program. Working alongside professionals and PCA’s in the field will provide a real-world foundation for continued education or a career in reforestation.

  • Environmental Organizing Fellowship (2024-2025), Green Corps (multiple U.S. locations)

    The planet needs all the help it can get. To win now and build a strong foundation for lasting progress, we need people who know how to organize: to run organizations and campaigns that will inspire the support and action we need to save our environment. Our program starts with intensive classroom training. You learn about issues and campaigns, organizing theory and principles, and skills from recruiting volunteers to staging a media event. Then, you move to a more hands-on experience. You make a difference on important campaigns to transition our country to clean energy, protect wildlife, and more. For example, Lauren Karpinski, an organizer from the Green Corps Class of 2019, brought together a coalition of 40 groups that helped win a landmark solar energy bill in Arkansas.

  • Integrated Fire and Recreation Internship (Jan.-May, 2024), Student Conservation Association (multiple U.S. locations)

    The internship will start with a two-week training with basic firefighter training (S-130 & S-190), an arduous work capacity test, and basic trail management and maintenance.  After the training, interns will spend approximately 14 weeks on districts implementing what they learned in the field. Upon completion of their 640-hour internship, interns will have the opportunity to earn the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority giving them eligibility to apply to merit vacancy announcements for two years with the Federal Government. This position is split between fire service and trail work, the amount of fire work will vary from site to site.

  • DC and District Internships (Fall 2023), U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (due July 17)

    Interns will gain insight into the legislative process, network with staff, and learn about the inner workings and responsibilities of a congressional office.   • Aquatic Research Data Internship (6 months), Colorado Parks And Wildlife (Fort Collins, CO)

    This internship utilizes online training and personal one-on-one instruction, working with software packages such as SQL, R, ArcGIS, and Tableau, to manage, manipulate, and analyze fisheries data from across the state. A primary topic of interest will be developed in consultation with the data analyst and worked on throughout the internship to produce a publication or presentation at the local American Fisheries Society Chapter meeting. Various opportunities to work alongside field crews to see how data collection is occurring in the field will be arranged.

  • GIS Internship (12 months), Ducks Unlimited, Inc (Dexter, MI; due May 31)

    Responsibilities include GIS data development for the National Wetlands Inventory within the Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, and U.S. territories in the Caribbean, and assisting with a variety of projects as needed, including data collection and management, cartography, geospatial analysis, and geospatial web applications.

  • Joe Burns Memorial Wildlife Policy Intern (July-Dec. 2023), The Wildlife Society (Remote)

    The Wildlife Society (TWS) has an anticipated opening for a paid wildlife policy intern with an interest in federal natural resource policy issues. This will be a six-month appointment running from July-December 2023.  The wildlife policy intern will be an integral part of TWS’ Government Affairs program. This program works to ensure that 1) TWS’ members are informed of policy issues and the impact policies have on their work in wildlife conservation, 2) policies empower, enable, and assist wildlife professionals in their work of wildlife conservation and management, and 3) wildlife science is the foundation upon which wildlife-related policy decisions are made.

    The purpose of the Youth Internship Program (YIP) for Natural Resources is to employ and expose students and recent graduates to natural resource careers within Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).  The selected candidate will experience a variety of learning experiences (i.e. ride along with officers, wildlife surveys, educational activities, seminars, training’s) and gain a broader understanding of CPW and its various careers.  This position is a great experience for those wanting to pursue a career as a District Wildlife Manager, Park Ranger, or biologist.

  • Cabin Leader Internship (summer 2023; males needed), Dunes Learning Center (Chesterton, IN)

    Cabin Leaders help students create connections, build confidence, and develop a sense of place by providing opportunities to explore, ask questions, reflect, and work together as a team. They facilitate the evening programs (campfire, group games, night hike, ice cream social, etc), lead meal and flag raising activities, and provide overnight supervision of campers throughout the week.

  • Land Conservation Intern (summer 2023), Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (Elizabeth, IL; due Apr. 26)

    The Land Conservation Internship (“the Intern”) position is a 40-hour per week, seasonal, paid position responsible for assisting with the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s (“JDCF”) Land Preservation and Land Stewardship programs, with a particular emphasis on conservation real estate transactions, geographic information systems, and ecological restoration. This position will also assist with the land stewardship activities at Twin Ponds Research Farm. This position is designed to give the Intern a comprehensive understanding of nonprofit land protection practices and procedures and land stewardship practices.

    The Environmental Education Intern’s primary responsibility is to assist with development and delivery of Lakeside Lab’s environmental education programs.     MobilizeGreen seeks two conservation minded Urban & Community Forestry Interns to serve 52 weeks in a virtual position within the Eastern region.  The U.S. Forest Service’s Eastern Region manages State and Private Forestry programs that provide funding and professional advice to improve the health of both public and private forests.     Sea Grant’s Community Engaged Internship (CEI) aims to broaden participation in coastal, ocean, Great Lakes, and marine sciences by offering training and mentorship, through paid internships, to undergraduate students from under-resourced, underrepresented and/or indigenous and tribal populations. This program aims to broaden participation in coastal and marine profession by engaging and recruiting diverse undergraduate students in place-based research, extension, education, and/or communication that respects and integrates local ways of knowing.
