Q: What can I do to make my resume stand out from the crowd?
A: The format and content on your resume can be diverse in a countless number of ways. There is not a “one size fits all” method to creating a great resume, but you should always be sure that it is consistent and error-free! And, here are a few things to keep in mind:
#1 Promote Your Education
You are obtaining a degree from the University of Illinois – a prestigious land-grant institution and world leader in research, teaching and public engagement – which speaks volumes about you! And, with a degree from the College of Media, which is considered an educational leader in the fields of advertising, journalism, and communications research, you stand out amongst the crowd.
Be sure to showcase this as you may find connections and resources available to you because you are a University of Illinois student.
#2 Highlight Your Experiences
Diversifying your experiences can help make your resume stand out. Join clubs and organizations, take on leadership roles, participate in research opportunities and case studies, and gain industry experience via internships.
One place to search for internships is Handshake @ Illinois; you can use it to look for various opportunities, both full-time and part-time, that take place during the academic year or over the summer months. Handshake is Illinois’ campus-wide recruiting platform where tens of thousands of jobs and internships are posted annually, specifically for ILLINOIS students. Be sure to add Handshake @ Illinois to your “toolbox” of avenues to search for internships (and full-time experiences)!
#3 Utilize Media Career Services
