Recipe submissions are now being accepted for the first-ever International Cook-off.
Current students or scholars can submit recipes that represent the country they’re between now and Sept. 14.
Each recipe submission must conform to one of the following five categories—dumplings, rice, bread, curry or kebabs.
International Student and Scholar Services and University Dining are hosting the inaugural cook-off as part of a long list of events for International Education Week, which starts Oct. 16 and continues through Oct. 22.
International Education Week celebrates the broad impact of international education, cultural exchange and scholarship that is uniquely experienced at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and within the community.
The week-long celebration is comprised of numerous educational, cultural and recreational events hosted by student groups, centers, colleges, units and local partners.
IEW is coordinated by ISSS, and a calendar of events can be found at https://calendars.illinois.edu/list/1215.
As for the cook-off, it will take place from 5-7 p.m. each night at during IEW.
Kimberly Yau, the associate director for ISSS, said once the submission deadline closes, she and guest judges from University Dining will select the winning submissions to compete.
“We can only have two countries per category, due to space limitations, and each team can have up to two chefs,” Yau said.
However, if people don’t want to cook or if someone’s recipe isn’t selected, Yau said they can still participate.
The competition itself will take place at the Illinois Street Residence Dining Center’s newly renovated demonstration kitchen, which can hold about 100 viewers. The first 30 viewers who swipe in will be able to not only watch the chefs prepare the food, but also sample the food on any given night during the competition week.
Students or scholars can submit their recipe online at https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/108723216?referrer=https://shibboleth.illinois.edu/.
