The Center for Advanced Study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will welcome Michael Day, former Chief Executive of Historic Royal Palaces to give three talks on cultural leadership and historic site management and interpretation. These talks are part of the George A. Miller Visiting Professors and Scholars Program and are open to the campus and general public.
Michael Day has worked in cultural heritage management since 1974. After several years as Director of the Jersey Heritage Trust, he became Chief Executive of Historic Royal Palaces in 2003, retiring in 2017. HRP is the conservation and education charity that oversees The Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, Banqueting House Whitehall, and Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland. Michael was on the faculty of the UEA Museum Leadership Programme from 1994-2011, co-directed the Nordic Museum Leadership Programme in Denmark from 2001-08, and has taught in the Clore Cultural Leadership Programme since 2007. He lectures at conferences around the world on cultural leadership, and on historic site management and interpretation. He is chair of the Battersea Arts Centre and serves on the Board of the National Trust. Michael was awarded an honorary doctorate by Kingston University in 2010 for his work in the heritage and museums sector, and was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the New Year Honours in 2015.

Michael Day Biography
Michael Day was CEO of Historic Royal Palaces from 2003 to 2017. Previously he was Director of the Jersey Heritage Trust, from 1987. He started his career as a curator with the Norfolk Museums Service in 1974 before moving in 1983 to the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.
Michael attended the Getty Leadership Institute in Berkeley, California in 1993. He was on the faculty of the UEA Museum Leadership Programme from 1994-2011, co-directed the Nordic Museum Leadership Programme in Denmark from 2001-08 and has taught on the Clore Cultural Leadership Programme since 2007. He has lectured and spoken at universities and conferences around the world on cultural leadership, and historic site management and interpretation.
He is chair of the Battersea Arts Centre, The Royal Tennis Court and a trustee of the National Trust, and formerly a trustee of the Alnwick Garden Trust and board member of the UK’s Cultural Leadership Programme.
Michael was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Kingston University in 2010 for his work in the heritage and museums sector, and received the Museums+Heritage Outstanding Individual Achievement Award in 2015. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2015 New Year Honours list.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys skiing, sailing, mountain walking, cycling and real tennis.
