After the November 2022 elections, the Illinois Supreme Court has a new look. For the first time in state history, the court has five female justices; in addition, three sitting justices are Black. Perhaps more consequential, however, is the political makeup of the court, as Democrats have a 5-2 advantage among the justices, the largest majority for the party ever. Professor Scott Szala discussed the new look and political makeup of the court with the Cook County Record, explaining “Everyone's backgrounds will help determine how they decide to take cases and will filter into it. They certainly will have to make decisions based on the law, but we all are a product of our own experiences and I’m sure that’s something that for all the new justices will be equally applicable.”
