Students in the Immigration Law Clinic have secured some major wins for their clients during the two years that the clinic has been in existence. Professor Lauren Aronson, director of the Clinic, shared the following successes:
Eight green card wins
- Bradley Windings (3L) and Tyler Smith (2L) assisted a Chinese national and former U of I grad student in getting his green card based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen.
- Jimmy Brennan Tsang (’20) and Jeronimo Simonovis (2L) assisted a Chinese national and former U of I grad student in getting her green card based on her marriage to a U.S. citizen.
- Jin Soo Lee (’20) assisted a thirteen-year-old Indian national in getting his green card based on humanitarian grounds.
- Clinton Oppong (’20) assisted a Turkish national in getting his green card based on a prior asylum grant.
- Jun Kyu Jeon (’20) assisted a Turkish national in getting his green card based on a prior asylum grant.
- Matt Hartzler (’20) and Marijose Ramirez (3L) assisted a Guatemalan national in getting her green card based on a prior asylum grant.
- Edward Kwak (’20) and Sara Buitron Viveros (LLM ’20) assisted a Nicaraguan national in getting her green card based on her marriage to a U.S. citizen.
- Jonathan Sheewon Park (’20) and George Cortina (’20) assisted a Mexican national in getting his green card based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen.
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for young people identified as abused, abandoned or neglected
- MJ Ramirez (3L) assisted in getting four young people from Guatemala designated for SIJS.
- Brittany Wiegand (’20) assisted in getting three young people from Guatemala and Honduras designated for SIJS.
- Bradley Windings (3L) assisted in getting two young people from Guatemala designated for SIJS.
- Alana Hart (’20), Khaleel Qandeel (3L) and Susana Lum (3L) each assisted in getting a young people from Central America designated for SIJS.
Renewed Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
- MJ Ramirez (3L) assisted a young person from Honduras and current U of I student with renewing his DACA designation.
Asylum win
- Minnie Seo (’20) assisted an Indian national in seeking and being granted asylum by USCIS.
New U.S. citizen
- Jin Soo Lee (’20) assisted a 25-year-old Nigerian man become a citizen in time to vote in the 2020 presidential election.
