The letter Professor Robin Fretwell Wilson co-authored with fellow legal scholars and sent to Tammy Baldwin, R-Wisconsin, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, helped push the Respect for Marriage Act out of the Senate and into law. The bill struck a balance between religious liberty and protections for gay marriage, and was partly based on work in Utah that Wilson had previously participated in. At the News-Gazette, Wilson detailed her involvement and what it was like to be able to attend the signing ceremony at the White House, telling the Champaign paper, “It was just jubilant, it was a joy to be there to watch so many people happy.”
