The final case of the Illinois Supreme Court's term was one of the most contentious. The state’s ban on assault weapons as well as large-capacity magazines was challenged in court almost as soon as it was signed into law, and Attorney General Kwame Raoul moved the case directly to the Supreme Court after it was declared unconstitutional in Macon County Court. Speaking to The 21st, Professor Jason Mazzone discussed the constitutional issues of bans on specific types of weapons as well as sheriffs choosing not to enforce the law, among other topics.
