Diversity & Social Justice Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a division of Student Affairs that exists to build capacity of students, staff, and faculty to explore diverse perspectives and empower those individuals to become social justice leaders and change agents in the community. Each Spring, Diversity & Social Justice Education honors outstanding community members whose work to address marginalization, oppression, and privilege has led to critical awareness, perspective taking, and equity-action in their community. In March, Professor Margareth Etienne received the 2023 Social Justice Award for Outstanding Faculty.
Nominated for the award by Professor Jennifer Robbennolt, the award recognizes Etienne as an unsung member of the University of Illinois campus working to create meaningful change. In addition to serving as the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate and International Programs, Etienne also leads the coursework for the Racial Justice Practicum at the College of Law, making her an integral part of the College's commitment to make a lasting impact in the area of racial justice. The entire College of Law community is grateful for Etienne's hard work and congratulates her on this tremendous honor.
